I usually tend to post poetry or baby name things and stuff in this section of the site, but not today.
You see, I kind of had some cool reflections on the way home and I thought I'd share them here. Nobody would read it anyway, but I feel better just letting it all out.
5 pm. I was tired but happy all the same. I had just been to school and finished having an hour-long talk with one of the most caring and loving teachers there ever was. It was awesome. As I silently rejoiced to the fact that I caught the "shortcut" bus home, I couldn't help but notice a mother-and-daughter duo walking behind me. Someone was making some sort of noise and repeating mumbled phrases loudly.
Then I remembered.
I knew I had heard something similar somewhere. It was the girl with Down syndrome and her ever-so-loving mama.
We hopped onto the same bus afterwards. As we walked toward our ride, the girl so innocently began to make shapes in the air and laughed all at once. Then, the whole way, the girl spoke vocally and proudly on the bus without a care in the world. Normally, I'd stare out the window or keep up with social media on my phone, but today, I couldn't help but plan out everything I'd say to defend her if someone else on the bus discriminated the girl with Down syndrome.
The bus stopped near my estate. Little did I remember that this mother-and-daughter duo lived in the same estate as me. Usually, I'm a pretty fast walker. Between the bus stop and my estate was a short 1-minute downhill slope, and most of the time I'd speed past that slope (most people would probably consider it moderate jogging.) However, today I decided to slow down and watch the mother and her daughter with that extra chromosome.
My knees were beating me up. Every inch of my body screamed, "HURRY UP." But I'm glad I didn't give in. Because what I witnessed next was pretty dang awesome.
The whole way downhill, the daughter made imaginary shapes in the air, speaking the same Cantonese phrases that I still could not make out. She was so sweet and innocent, so pure. After a short while, she started running down the hill, and that's when she started laughing without a care in the world. When we got to the entrance of our estate where the locked gates stood, the mother shot a quick glance at me, then proudly said to her daughter, "Put in the code."
I watched as the girl, whose age I am still unsure of, concentrated so hard to punch in the four-digit code. The whole time, I couldn't help but smile. It was absolutely amazing witnessing that girl's pride and joy when the gates opened, then seeing the same pride and joy on the mother's face at the sight of her daughter's accomplishment.
It was everything I needed as a beautiful reminder amidst a stressful and exhausting week.
A mother's love does not hold back from extra chromosomes.
In fact, if you asked me, I'd say that the extra chromosome brings extra love.
